Tuesday Evening Recreational Rides in Fairport’s Institution of Cycling We meet at the bench outside the store and depart at 5:45pm.  I design the routes for these no-drop rides, and try to make them about 20 miles long, with our longest being about 25 miles at the peak of evening daylight during June & July.  We always head east of Fairport – the Macedon, Penfield, Walworth, Victor and Farmington areas are where we end up. The pace of riding is about 12 - 15 mph.  While we are not competitive, nor are we moving at break-neck speed, the routes are not always suitable for beginners.   However, because a portion of most routes end up adjacent to the canal path, I always encourage beginners to come and join us, then take a shortcut back to the store via the path whenever they feel they are "half" tired.  This way they can build up strength and gain confidence in riding on roads at their own pace.  Mountain bikes or other such “fat tire” bikes are not recommended.  Hybrids and road bikes move well on pavement, which is where we are 99.9% of the time.  (The other .1% is the 3 minutes of gravel on the canal path that we encounter on the way to the Lyndon Road ramp.) As the leader, my role is to "sweep", meaning I make sure that no rider is left behind.  If faster riders choose, they may move ahead at their own pace, following the planned route.  This method allows folks to ride at a clip that suits their style, yet ensures that no one is left behind.   Remember, we will have riders of all endurance levels and everyone wants to get exercise & do their best!   I look forward to seeing you on one of our rides.  Please feel free to contact me at 388-1350 for more details, or at mjm111@frontiernet.net.  Thanks for your interest and remember that T.E.R.R.I.F.I.C. rides are all about  Camaraderie, Companionship and Conversation… without the Competition!!  Mary Jeanne
